After our arrival on the island of São Miguel, they will be waiting for us to transfer us to the selected hotel. The rest of the day will be free to start discovering the attractions of Ponta Delgada, one of the capitals of the Azores archipelago. Ponta Delgada is the capital of the island of São Miguel in the Azores, Portugal. This city offers a charming combination of history, architecture, natural landscapes, and a vibrant local culture. Tip: The Matriz Church of São Sebastião is the main temple of the city. It dates back to the 16th century and features interesting architecture.
After enjoying our breakfast, we will start our journey towards the Seven Cities Lagoon, one of the most important natural wonders of the Azores. Our adventure will begin with a visit to the famous pineapple plantations in Fajã de Baixo, a village next to Ponta Delgada known for its agriculture. We will then ascend to the viewpoint of Pico do Carvão, where we can enjoy one of the best views of the island. Just before reaching Seven Cities, we will make a brief stop at Canário Lagoon, from where we can enjoy the best views of the area, including Oasa Lake, Santiago Lake, and the twin lakes. Upon our arrival at Seven Cities, we will visit the Vista do Rei viewpoint to admire the views of the twin lakes, capturing the best photographs of the location. Next to the twin lakes, we will explore the village of Sete Cidades, which gives its name to the location. We can have a walk along the lakeside and enjoy our lunch (included) at one of the typical restaurants in the area. On our return journey during the afternoon, we will make a brief stop at the Escalvado viewpoint, from where we can catch a glimpse of our next destination, the small village of Mosteiros, perched on a delta formed by lava from past volcanic eruptions in the area. We will gradually descend to the village, where we will contemplate its impressive coastal landscape with cliffs, rock formations, and sea views. Our last stop before returning to Ponta Delgada will be at Ponta da Ferraria, famous for its hot springs. Geothermal activity in the area has created a natural pool of hot water in the Atlantic Ocean. This pool is filled with warm seawater emanating from fissures in the volcanic rocks. If the weather permits, we may immerse ourselves in the natural pools. Tip: Let's not forget to bring our swimsuits during the spring and summer months. However, in fall and winter, we recommend wearing comfortable footwear and warm clothing.
After enjoying our breakfast, we will be picked up at our accommodation to begin our adventure to Furnas, one of the must-visit places on the island of São Miguel. Our first stop will be the Pisão viewpoint, from where we can observe the town of Caloura and the southern part of the island. We will then continue our journey, passing through Vila Franca do Campo, which used to be the main capital of the island before natural disasters caused by the eruption of the Fogo volcano. Continuing our way to the east of the island, we will make a brief stop at Castelo Branco, an ancient fortress 700 meters high that offers one of the best views of our destination: the Furnas calderas. Upon reaching our destination, we will discover its fumarolic field, an important place to visit where we can witness first-hand the secondary volcanic activity of the Azores. Additionally, this location serves as a natural kitchen where locals cook the famous Furnas stew using volcanic steam. Upon arrival in the town of Furnas, we will enjoy our lunch (included) and savor its traditional stew. After enjoying our lunch, we will visit the Terra Nostra Park, considered the most beautiful botanical garden on the island, where we can enjoy its thermal waters. Before leaving Furnas, we will visit its famous natural mineral water springs, nourished by the volcanoes. Finally, during our return to Ponta Delgada in the afternoon, we will make a brief stop at the Pico de Ferro viewpoint to contemplate another stunning perspective of Furnas Lake and its surroundings.
