You will walk among the temples, theaters, squares, roads and streets with original columns, all within the city walls. Therein, remains of settlements dating back to the Bronze Age, Iron Age, Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, Umayyad and Abbasid periods have been found, indicating human occupation at this site for more than 2,500 years. A local English-speaking guide will be included for your classic 2-hour tour of this Decapolis Roman city. This ancient city was one of the most prosperous in the Roman Empire, covered in sand for centuries until its remains were discovered in 1806. You'll head to the ancient city gate and walk through the well-preserved ruins as your guide tells you stories about the city in its heyday. You will see its arches, theaters and its elegant street with columns. You will take photos of the impressive Oval Plaza, the Temples of Zeus and Artemis, and the intriguing egg-shaped republic square framed by standing columns. After having explored Jerash, you will continue to the 12th century Ajloun Castle, built in the time of Saladin to defend against the Crusader armies. You'll head inside this semi-untouched hill fortress and walk through the corridors and stairwells. You will see the holes used by the invaders and admire the amazing views of the lush hills of the Jordan Valley from the towers. After seeing Ajloun Castle, you'll rejoin your vehicle and relax on your long drive back to Amman, ending with a hotel drop-off. After about an hour, you will arrive at the Church of Saint George, the 19th century basilica in the heart of the city. This famous church is home to the Madaba Mosaic Map, a detailed floor mosaic of the Holy Land believed to have been created in the 6th century AD. You will admire the interior of the church and the impressive floor map, with its evocative depictions of the ancient Jerusalem, Jericho, and lands like Lebanon, Sinai, and Egypt. Then you will head to the open-air museum known as the Archaeological Park, which houses a collection of ruins and mosaics such as the Church of the Virgin Mary and other house mosaics on the floor. You will visit the historic Catholic Church of San Juan Bautista, with its beautiful bell tower from which you will have an impressive view of Madaba. You will visit its underground museum in memory of San Juan Bautista. After these visits, you will continue to Mount Nebo, the hill where Moses is believed to have gazed upon the Promised Land. You'll soak up the panoramic views over the Dead Sea and Jordan Valley, and visit the Byzantine Hilltop Church to see its legendary mosaics. You'll gaze at the luminous pieces of early art and their vivid recreations of animals, people, and hunting wine-making scenes at this beautiful Franciscan monastery. Along the way, you'll take in views of Jordan's arid landscapes. You will stop at Bethany beyond the Jordan River, known as El-Maghtas in Arabic, the site on the eastern bank of the river where Jesus is believed to have been baptized by John the Baptist. Together with a local guide, you'll take a tour of the riverbanks and excavated key ruins, discover how the site was hallowed as the site of Jesus' baptism by the Vatican and a visit by Pope John Paul II in the year 2000. You will drink in a powerful sense of spirituality, and you will know the remains of the Roman and Byzantine churches, caves, wells and baptismal pools. As you walk, you'll hear from your guide why archaeologists believe it was here that John the Baptist lived, preached, and performed baptisms. You will learn more about this famous Christian pilgrimage site and how it is considered sacred in the three main religions: Christianity, Judaism and Islam, as it is believed to be the place of the ascension of the prophet Elijah to heaven. We will then drive to the lowest point on earth to have free time to swim in the therapeutic waters of the Dead Sea for an experience not to be missed, as it is the first natural spa in the world. After these visits, you will meet your driver again and return to your hotel in Amman, where the tour ends. Tip Greca: Do not confuse. There you will make a classic visit. As you travel, you'll gaze at desert landscapes and hear tales of Jordanian history. Petra, found carved out of a sandstone valley by the Nabatean people about 2,000 years ago, this ancient city of rose-red rock located 245 kilometers from Amman, was the crossroads of ancient trade routes, to dominate ancient Arabia. You will pass through Little Petra, a small rocky valley with carvings, which archaeologists believe acted as the Nabataean caravan before heading to the main city and as an accommodation stop for merchants who traveled through the city. You will continue to the main site of Petra to learn more about its magnificent history. You will leave the vehicle and enjoy a 2-hour tour with a local guide through this wonder listed as a UNESCO Heritage Site. You will walk or ride a horse through the "Siq", a narrow path of 1.2 kilometers; rock fissure that was once the main entrance to the city. You will marvel at your first glimpse of the hauntingly beautiful "El-Khazneh" Treasury as the canyon suddenly opens up. You will admire this rose-red masterpiece, originally built to house priceless treasures and capture it on camera. Then, you will walk through the widening of the canyon to witness other buildings such as the 3,000 seat Theatre, the Royal Tombs and the Byzantine Church. As you explore, your guide will describe how the Nabateans carved the buildings and how they mastered the harsh conditions of the desert to make their lives here. After approximately two hours of exploring, you will enjoy free time and have lunch on your own. If time permits, you will be able to climb up to the Monastery on your own or to the High Place of Sacrifice: a cliff-top altar once used for animal sacrifices and other ceremonies. You will return to the entrance of Petra and meet your private vehicle and driver. Your tour continues by discovering the fantastic Dead Sea. You will travel through desert landscapes to the eastern shores of Sowayma. You will visit a private beach at the water's edge and enjoy free time to swim in the waters of the Dead Sea. You will relax on the beach and enjoy the beautiful surroundings that cannot be found anywhere else.
