On the shore sits the bronze Zlatorog, the golden-horned ibex of the local legend. It is a short stop and the right one: a coffee, a few photographs, a first look at the mountains before the road starts to climb.   Over the Vršič Pass The drive between Kranjska Gora and the Soča Valley is a highlight of its own. The Vršič Pass is Slovenia's highest mountain road at 1,611 metres, climbing through fifty numbered hairpin bends, each one marked with its own stone. The road was built during the First World War, and near the top you pass the wooden Russian Chapel that remembers the prisoners of war who built it. On the far side, the road drops into the Trenta valley, where the Soča begins.   Explore Soča Valley In the heart of the Soča Valley lies Bovec, the base for your afternoon. Here the group splits by choice: one part has lunch in town, then heads for Kozjak Waterfall and Kobarid. The other goes straight to the river for rafting, and eats after coming off the water. Everyone meets again in Bovec for the drive back to Ljubljana.   Option 1: Discover Kozjak Waterfall and Kobarid An easy trail leads to the Kozjak Waterfall, a turquoise pool hidden in a rock chamber, one of the most photographed corners of the valley. Then Kobarid, where the museum tells the story of the WWI Soča Front in the mountains above the town. Time for a coffee on the square before the group gathers again.   Option 2: White water rafting Rafting near Bovec is the most popular outdoor activity in the valley, and arguably in all of Slovenia. A professional crew and complete equipment are ready for you, up to 3 hours on the river in boats of up to 8 plus a licensed raft guide. Suitable for beginners and kids, good for families and team bonding alike.
